Success rates help our patients make decisions about IVF
When patients are learning about in vitro fertilization in the course of their family building journey, they naturally want to know will this procedure work for them. The Society for Reproductive Technology (SART) states that for women under 35, the percentage of live births via IVF is 55.6%. Live births per first embryo transfer is 41.4%. With a later embryo transfer, the live births percentage is around 47%.
It’s important to look at IVF success rates from two different angles. First, patients will want to know, given their individual diagnosis and circumstances, will IVF work for them. Second, patients can also find information on a clinic’s overall success rates with IVF through being an accredited member of SART where this data is reported annually.
How successful will I be with IVF?
When presented with the option of IVF, probably the first question that comes to mind for a patient is what is the probability it will work for them. Knowing your success probabilities can help you and your fertility specialist better plan for a course of treatment to maximize cost-savings and your chances of having a baby.
Success with IVF depends on many factors. Some of these key factors are found in your health profile and include your age, body mass index, ovarian reserve test results, your reproductive history, and clinical diagnosis.
What are the clinic’s IVF success rates?
Patients may also want to know IVF success in terms of the “track record” of the fertility clinic and its lab and how they compare to other fertility centers on a national level. A specific clinic’s IVF success is based on many different factors, but ultimately it boils down to how well the clinic can diagnose and treat a patient with the most successful IVF protocol as well as the expertise of the clinic’s IVF lab.
A comparison of clinic success rates may not be meaningful because patient characteristics, treatment approaches and entrance criteria for ART may vary from clinic to clinic.
